Occupational Therapy
The broad aim of Occupational Therapy (OT) is to maximise the independence ability and life satisfaction of people with physical, emotional or learning needs. The title of ‘Occupational’ has a dual meaning. The first is the emphasis on developing or maintaining abilities in daily occupations such as dressing, eating or engaging in work or school. The second is the use of occupation itself to develop these skills. For example, rather than engaging in an exercise to develop movement, an activity is chosen that is self-motivating – for children this is usually play.
As the scope for OT is from birth to end of life care and across the spectrum of issues, OT’s frequently specialise to work with specific age groups or conditions.
Sue Horobin, Specialist Children’s OT
Sue qualified as an Occupational Therapist from the University College of Ripon and York St. John in 1991. After broadening her knowledge of OT through physical and mental health posts, Sue specialised in Paediatrics in 1994. Sue’s experience working with children began in the USA when she developed her great interest in Sensory Integration (SI). On her return to the UK, Sue was fortunate to work with an experienced team combining SI with other approaches. Sue has worked with babies to teens with conditions such as Dyspraxia, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Cerebral Palsy and Attachment disorders. Sue is a member of SINETWork, has attended postgraduate courses in cognitive approaches, Sensory Integration, and Attachment, and has taught on the national SI foundation course.
Sue is passionate about working with children, young people and their families to address their sensory needs and develop motor and independence skills and self-esteem. As a parent of an adopted child with additional needs, Sue is aware of the reality of carrying out theory into daily life. Her desire is to enable families to understand their child’s nervous system and to be equipped with the tools, skills and strategies they need.
Professional Registration & Insurance
Sue is registered with the Health Professions Council, and is a member of the British Association of Occupational Therapists and two of the College of Occupational Therapists specialist sections – Children, Young People and Families (COTCYPF) and Independent Practice (COTIPP). Sue has the appropriate level of Insurance as recommended by the professional body.
Geographical area
The Practice is based in Shropshire and provides a service to the West Midlands and Mid Wales region. Consideration is always given to requests from further afield.
